QUESTION: I am restoring a 63 fb, and am attending some car shows in hopes to find other 63’s to learn from. One of the things that I’m not sure of is the firewall color. I’m finding that some are black and of different gloss levels, and some are actually the car color. What is correct here?

ANSWER: This is a great question, because as time passes, more of these cars are getting restored to a personal preference, rather than to an original theme. So to those who don’t know what’s correct, it can be confusing.

The firewalls were never car color, as some other manufacturers did. They were all 30% gloss black, as were the inner fenders. This is equivalent to a satin black. To round out your engine bay, your radiator support should be gloss black as was the fan guard.
